I come from a generation that doesn't understand it and wasn't exposed to it. I ask that you have patience with us, with her, him, they/them. It's not that we don't want to use those terms, it's that that's how we learned English.
So it does not compute easily to call one person they. Try not take offense. They changed math on us, now the way we learned English has to change.
